Basketball Championship
Yes, it was only a Whitehouse Little League 3rd and 4th graders playing but to the players and the parents, it was paramount. "It" was the championship game, "Stars" vs "Mavericks". The Mavericks lucked into the tournament game with an ill deserved bye and a forfeit. The Stars, the more polished and better coached team, came out on top after one OT. The score? Who cares. The highlight of the game was not only watching these young athletes but in watching "the coach" of the Mavericks. There has not been in the history of Whitehouse Basketball one who is so animated and inappropiately vocal, not only to his players but to the spectators. To watch him rant and rave and scream and holler and slap his clip board was almost more drama then one could witness at one sitting. The climax of watching him nearly cry when one of his star players (and son) fouling out in the midst of the 4th quarter was too much to bear. His behaviour is consistent with someone who is only worried about the outcome of the game and how it reflects on him. He was not obviously worried about the players or the example he was setting, which, eventually led to their downfall. If he had focused his rage into a more appropriate avenue like maybe helping his players by actually coaching them he may of pulled it out but alas this is a skill he is devoid of. It was never more true that "man is slave to his emotion" and this "coach" far more then most. In walking out I was saddened to see the coach's son crying and then overhearing one of the many parents comment on how the son cries every game. I have personally witnessed the verbal abuse that this child (and his mother) have had to deal with from his coach/father over the years. It is apparent to me that the child is playing only to appease his father's desire to live vicariously through him. Sadly the father/coach isn't smart enough to realize the pressures and expectations he is putting on his son. He is setting him up for failure and we can only expect the son to play until he is no longer under the steel control of his power hungry and egocentric father/coach. At that time he will find something to do that he truly enjoys and can gain satisfaction for himself. It is sad that just anyone can coach little league sports as it breeds an arena for these self centered, control hungry parents to rain down terror on these all to innocent and impressionable children. Well until next season.....c'est la vie
